Before artificial electrical refrigeration was invented, people could only turn to refrigeration with natural ice. That is, they stacked natural ice into wells in winter and used them in the following summer. In Mesopotamia people have discovered the relics of wells for storing natural ice that date back to 4000 years ago. In the 16th Century, travelers pointed out that there were markets selling ^snow water ̄ and ice blocks that could be bought for only several coins all year long in such places as Constantinople and Tripoli. |
In the early 1870 ' s, Professor CdVonLinde (1842-1934) of Munich Industrial University made progress in researching ammonia high-pressure refrigerating machines. He produced artificial ice makers as general manager of Linde Ice-maker Manufacture Co. Before that nobody but those extremely rich families living at riverside or lakeside could afford to store natural ice in ice rooms in winter for yearlong enjoyment. However, the emergence of ice makers realized people ' s dreams of using ice all year long
